Kenora-Patricia Child and Family Services - Independent Living

Semi-Independent Living Program

The four semi-independent living apartments are currently located in a complex situated in Kenora.  The program is designed to be a stepping stone for youth living in foster or group care to living independently.  It creates an opportunity for young people to learn to live on their own, take care of themselves and try out independence.

Youth are provided with a start up allowance to assist with furnishing and equipping the apartment and then an all-inclusive living allowance is provided monthly.

Eligibility

Any Crown Ward between the ages of 18-21 years of age are eligible to apply.  In some instances youth enter the Semi-Independent Program prior to their 18th birthday and remain there after their wardship terminates and he or she becomes eligible for Extended Care and Maintenance (ECM).

Staffing

There are two staff attached to this program, (although it should be noted that young persons, under the age of eighteen will also have regular involvement with his or her Children’s Services Worker).  A Proctor occupies the fifth apartment within the same complex.  The role of the proctor is to be available for any emergency situations and to maintain order within the complex.

The Semi-Independent Living Counselor assists youth in developing life management skills such as:

  • Budgeting
  • Meal Planning
  • Relationships
  • Education/Employment
  • Health
  • Long Term Plans
  • Accomodations/Housing Issues
